About Fred Fugazzi August 4, 1941 - November 5, 1977

Fred was inducted into the New Dorp High School Hall of Fame on September 24, 1993

Fred was a three-year varsity starter at both fullback and linebacker and won two consecutive New York City PSAL championships. Three times All City, he scored 3 touchdowns in the first ever New York City PSAL Championship in 1959.

He averaged over one touchdown a game his senior year and was fourth in the city in scoring. Fred rushed for over 913 yards in eight games. He had an illustrious collegiate career where he rushed for over 2500 yards, 39 touchdowns and 261 points. He ranked as high as sixth in scoring in the nation in 1961 and eighteenth in rushing yardage.

He captained All-Conference team all three years he started. He also made all Missouri State Team, NAIA All-American as well as 3rd team Little All American.

Fred was drafted by the Boston Patriots professional football team of the AFL (currently New England). He was never cut, but left the team to serve in the U.S. Marine Corp and played football at Quantico. After sustaining injuries, he received a medical discharge in 1966.

He joined the NYC Fire Department and was decorated for bravery and heroism on two occasions. He worked at Mount Loretto where he coached football and was appointed supervisor of recreational activities while on the Fire Department. His play and personality has been described as tough, aggressive, reckless and fearless.

Fred was murdered in 1977 while trying to break up a fight in which he came to the aid of and "underdog" stranger. After his death, his close friends, family and former teammates established the Fred Fugazzi Memorial Award Scholarship and the Fugazzi Bowl for all-star senior high school football players.

Both unique institutions have been in existence since his death. The award is regarded as the "Heisman" Award of Staten Island high school football. Over the years, many high school players have been honored and recognized through this award and game.

Fred is considered one of the best to ever play the game on Staten Island. He joined Marty Ryan and Vic Esposito (former 1959 teammates) as he posthumously was inducted into the New Dorp High School Football Hall of Fame in 1993.

On October 9, 1999, Fred Fugazzi was inducted into the Missouri Valley College Athletic Hall of Fame in Marshall, Missouri.
Each year the Fugazzi family donates a $2000 scholarship to the Award winner's school.
